Rewind 1892: The Bokhara Year

In this article, we look back 122 years to the infamous SS Bokhara year of 1892 and the Interport match against Hong Kong in Shanghai. After a pause of 22 years following the win by Shanghai in 1867, the Interport matches between Hong Kong and Shanghai were played regularly during the early 1890s. Hong Kong had been victorious by an innings and 123 runs early in 1892 in Hong Kong, on the back of an excellent 107 by their captain, J. Dunn, and destructive bowling spells of 6/56, from Dr. J.A. Lowson, and 8/60, by E.J.D. Coxon. However, Shanghai managed to regroup to win the return match in October by 157 runs, and the Hong Kong captain, J. Dunn, conceded that "they were outplayed in batting, bowling and fielding." The umpire accompanying the team up to Shanghai, Major Turner, had been instrumental in arranging the first Interport match back in 1866.

SCC League Review: Bashers Defeat Daredevils, K2 Leopards Win on Run Rate, Pudong Beats the Hot Dogs

Bashers Bowlers Defeat the Daredevils
By Mark Henwood, SCC Marketing & Communications

Match: Daredevils vs Bashers (Division 3)
Date: 26 May 2013
Venue: SRFC Near
Toss: Daredevils, who chose to field
Result: Bashers won by 33 runs

The Bashers overcame a strong Daredevils side to win their first match of the season on a gloomy day at the SRFC. Andy Sutherland, Daredevils captain, won the toss and decided to field first.

The opening bowlers for the Daredevils, Fraser Pearson (4-0-8-3) and Joe Osbourne (4-0-29-1), immediately applied the pressure with some quality swing bowling in the overcast conditions. Pearson was particularly effective in creating wicket chances and restricting the run rate. Mal Collins (8), and Mark Henwood (5), struggled to score and both were dropped early. Pearson struck in the third over by bowling Collins. After hitting a fine four through mid-wicket, Ben Collins (5) was caught and bowled, and then Henwood was caught at mid-off. The Bashers were 29/3 after 5 overs. That brought Justin Field (25) and Mikson Pathi (29) together for a significant 45 run partnership. Pathi played some elegant lofted drives for boundaries and Field also played an aggressive innings. Barry Greaves (4-0-26-2) broke the partnership by bowling Field, and then Ali Mann (6) produced an entertaining cameo that included a cracking on-drive, his first boundary for the Bashers. Pathi was plumb LBW to Osbourne in his second spell, and then Bavi Jain (0) was bowled for a first ball duck by Greaves with the score on 82/6 in the 14th over. Mann was bowled by Sutherland (4-0-26-1) in the 17th over and the match was in the balance, but a strong finish by Oliver Wilson (21 not out) and Paul Howard (14 not out) enabled the Bashers to post 124/7 off their 20 overs. Shanghai CC Defeats Beijing CC to Reclaim China Cup

The Shanghai Cricket Club defeated the Beijing Cricket Club in Beijing on Sunday to reclaim the China Cup, defeating the hosts by 31 runs.

In Recent Times
Having far greater numbers of ex-pats from which to draw cricketing talent, one might expect the Shanghai Cricket Club to always be favorites to beat Beijing. However, Beijing have turned the tables on Shanghai and stand at five victories to the SCC’s two; and in the words of newly appointed SCC Club Captain Sanjay Anugula, “show us what’s wrong with Shanghai cricket.” Sanjay has taken a no nonsense approach to redressing the situation, naming Waqar Khattak as team Captain and Tim O’Connell as his number two and instigating regular Dragons nets with a fitness first directive and a motto of “Fight for every ball!” This touring Dragons XI  includes only five from the last match with the six debutants having shown great commitment to the early season training. So, whereas before, the process of selection was a simple case of getting the best individual players ( often an unchanged squad ) to show up on match day and have a go, there now exists a dynamic and inclusive process that engages all Shanghai club cricketers to come along and join in the sprints, the fielding drills and the nets as a whole resource from familiarity, unity and Shanghai pride come together in the spirit of a singular force far greater, it is hoped, than XI handy players might muster. Maroons Overcome Greens in Interclub Match

Maroons – Oliver Austin (c), John Newton (vc), Paul Malpas, Razzaq Mahmood, Manoj Zalpuri, Mike Hall, Ross Candido, Eric Marcellin, Shoaib Meer, Prateek Gadhecha, Santosh Yadav, Irfan Idrees

Greens – Waqar Khattak (c), Phil Mildenhall (vc), Jacque Erasmus, Ben Lyons, Kevin Wright, Sajid Anwar, Bernie Hughes, Deepak Nautyal, Sameer Jolly, Vinay Kumar, Nick Bangs, Vaibhav Krishnan

It was an extremely hot and sunny day at the SRFC. The Maroons won the toss and batted first. There was a solid opening partnership between Oliver Austin (38) and Paul Malpas (75) that repelled the strong opening bowling spells from Deepak Nautyal (8-2-32-1) and Nick Bangs (10-3-36-0). The Greens missed a chance during this period, and regularly beat the bat. The first change bowlers Waqar Khattak (10-2-42-2) and Sajid Anwar (8-0-41-1) offered no respite to the batsmen, but they began to accelerate their scoring between overs 20 and 30. Jon Newton (14) and Ross Candido (20) provided the most aggressive scoring during the last 20 overs of the innings, and there were also brief flourishes from Razzaq Mahmood (6), Manoj Zalpuri (8), Mike Hall (14), Eric Marcellin (4) and Shoaib Meer (24). Khattak and Bangs were the most dangerous bowlers for the Greens. Vinay Kumar (9-0-54-0) also provided a steady spell of spin bowling during the middle overs, and Phil Mildenhall (3-0-20-1) picked up the key wicket of Malpas. The Greens fielding and teamwork dropped off during the 30 – 40 over period, which allowing Maroons to build momentum. Continue reading “Maroons Overcome Greens in Interclub Match”
