A sunny and warm Sunday morning gave way to a cool afternoon as five clubs across all three divisions took to the fields at the Shanghai Football Rugby Club this past weekend for the second week of the Shanghai Cricket Club League. The 2012 SCC League cricket season officially begins this coming Sunday at the Shanghai Football Rugby Club and Dulwich College.

The first weekend will feature matchups between the Division 1 DPR Hot Dogs and Pudong Power, Division 2 Digital Devils and Bashers CC taking on Leopards CC and Dynamite Devils respectively, and Division 3 Pudong 2 against the Dulwich Knights.

Pudong Power defeated the Dulwich Knights to secure the 2011 SCC League Division 3 championship on Sunday.

The team went into the finals with the best regular season record in Division 3 at 8-2-2 and faced a resurgent Dulwich Knights who had recovered from a mid season lull to take the Semi-Final against the DPR Hot Dogs. Batting first, Pudong sent a target of 180 and proceeded to bowl out their opposition for 120.

With a stirring win that came down to the final over, Pudong Power claimed victory in the SCC League Division 2 championship over the weekend.

Pudong Power held off a late innings charge by the Devils Digital to win the championship. With just 3 runs needed from the last ball of the innings, the Digitals dug hard in an attempt to draw the scores level following a bye from Pudong’s final delivery. Confusion abounded as Pudong ran out the injured on-strike batsman’s runner as he tried to return for the tieing run. The final result, Pudong had won by one run.

The Daredevils Cricket Club defeated K2 Cricket Club of China to win the 2011 SCC League Division 1 crown on Sunday.

Although downgraded to a tropical storm, Muifa brought enough wind and rain to Shanghai on Sunday to wash out any hope of cricket being played at SRFC.

With early reports from the ground that rain was intermittent but that wind was high, the decision to cancel all games was postponed until a firsthand pitch inspection could be made.

At 9 am, the report came back from the Devils that the parameter fences had been knocked down and continued high wind and rain would not permit any form of cricket to be played. The Devils Division 2 Digital vs Doosra duel would not be decided today.

However, with hardly any rain in sight  downtown, the Division 1 sides scheduled to play at SRFC – Bashers CC and Daredevils CC – agreed to inspect the pitch for themselves, unwilling to throw in the towel just yet. Continue reading “Muifa Washers Out Sunday’s Matches” →

As the SCC League gets set for a furious two-month finish to the season, we take a look back at the first half of 2011 and highlight some of the standout performances.

The 2011 SCC League season opened on a sunny April 17, with Division 1 Daredevils CC facing the Bashers CC, and the defending champion DPR Hot Dogs against Pudong Power. By the end of the day, the Pudong Power had their first win in two seasons, and the Daredevils repeated their 2010 semi-final performance, besting the Bashers with strong batting.

As the weeks progressed and the season took shape, each division began to see some top cricket emerge. In Division 2, new addition Devils Digital, the 2010 Division 3 champions, continued their winning ways as they stormed to a 6-1 record thanks to a strong bowling attack and good run support.  Pudong Power meanwhile, began their season with four straight losses before righting the ship and reeling off five wins in a row to move to the top of the standings going into this weekend. The complete SCC 2011 League Schedule is now available online. Due to ground availability issues at SRFC, several games have been moved and venues changed. Because of the dearth of ground availability, all available playing days at SRFC and Dulwich are now full. Therefore, there is no further scope for rain-affected matches to be re-scheduled.

In light of this, the SCC Executive Committee, including the chairmen of the four foundation clubs, has updated theSCC League rules for rain-affected matches.

The key change is that the Duckworth-Lewis method will not be used to determine the result of rain-affected matches. Given the complexity of trying to calculate Duckworth-Lewis targets for matches re-starting after a rain break, the committee has agreed a simpler calculation (based on run-rates) would be more appropriate for the SCC League. The Chinese national men’s cricket team will play the Daredevils Cricket Club this Sunday in the second of the Chinese side’s three game warm-up ahead of the ACC U-19 Challenge Cup next month in Malaysia.

“Its an honour for us to face the Chinese national team on Sunday,” said Daredevils captain Jasim Baig. “The team and I are looking forward to it as we have seen them play and they certainly have the potential to challenge any opposition.”

The Chinese national men’s cricket team begins a three game warm up series ahead of the ACC Challenge Cup this weekend with a match against SCC League side Pudong Power at the Shanghai Rugby Football Club on Sunday.

The Chinese team will travel to Penang, Malaysia in July to participate in the ACC U-19 Challenge Cup. They will face Bhutan on July 3, Iran on July 4, and Myanmar on July 6.

The match between Pudong and the Chinese national team is the first in a three-game series to be played over the next three weekends. The Daredevils Cricket Club will play China on June 12 at Dulwich College and the DPR Hot Dogs will face the national side on June 19 at the Shangha Rugby Football Club.
