Match Report: China Cup 2016

The Shanghai Cricket Club Dragons faced off against the Beijing Cricket Club Lions on a wet Sunday in late May in Shanghai to decide the 2016 China Cup. 

Beijing arrived at Wellington Cricket Ground in a confident mood, in hopes of retaining the China Cup against a much changed Shanghai team. On arrival, both teams were more concerned with what their weather apps were telling them about the forecast, rather than the task in hand. The Shanghai team took to drying the wicket, which meant using a shovel and rake to try and get some of the excess water off the pitch.

After around an hour of debating when the game would begin both teams settled on a 35 over game, which would begin as soon as both teams would agree that it wasn’t raining too heavy.

SCC Meet with Mike Gatting

The Shanghai Cricket Club was invited by the British Chamber of Commerce and the Yang Foundation to an informal lunch with former England skipper Mike Gatting on Thursday to discuss the continuing development of cricket in China.

Gatting is heavily involved in Chinese youth cricket development via the MCC. The discussion was centered on how the SCC can be of help in all areas of cricket development in Shanghai and greater China. The sides also discussed the possibility of arranging tourists from further afar.

Club Captain Dayne Wotton took the opportunity to present Gatting with one of our new club polos and ties. Many thanks to the Yang Foundation and BritCham for arranging the meeting.

Following great support from the merchandise guru of Shanghai cricket, Mark Henwood, the Shanghai Cricket Club is proud to unveil its first range of official merchandise.

To supplement the SCC blazer, we now have a range of causal polo shirts as well as an SCC tie. These are available for all current and former members for RMB150 each for the polo shirts and RMB50 for the tie.

SCC Dragons Set for China Cup

Shanghai Cricket Club Captain Dayne Wotton today announced the SCC Dragons side that will compete in the 2016 China Cup against Beijing CC.

Kevin Wright will captain the team to play against Beijing in the annual match last won by Shanghai in 2013. The in-form trio of Chris Wade, Steven Kelaher and Manik Kapoor will make their debuts for the Dragons and Alex Todorov will play his first home match alongside a host of returning regulars. Season Off to Flyer with Successful Sixes

The 2016 cricket season in Shanghai is now truly underway after a successful weekend of sixes kicked things off in style.

Twelve teams from across nine clubs battled in near perfect weather at Wellington College which resulted in K2 being crowned champions after defeating the Leopards in the final. This is K2 second successive title following last years D1 championship and as we enter the regular season, they must be considered favourites for the season ahead.

Aside from K2’s success, there were other notable performances, with a young promising Dulwich team reaching the semi finals. This should bode well for their season ahead as they make the step up to Division 2 for the first time. Continue reading “Season Off to Flyer with Successful Sixes” →

2016 Season Opening Sixes

The Shanghai Cricket Club opens the 2016 Season this coming weekend with a sixes tournament at Wellington College.

Games start at 1 pm on Saturday afternoon and long time SCC sponsor Santa Fe will be setting up tents for teams as per previous events.

Following the games on Saturday, the SCC has booked the upstairs at Big Bamboo on Nanyang Road from 6:30 pm and will be taking care of the tab for a couple of drinks for all members including those who couldn't make it out to the sixes. It's an opportunity for all members to get together and kick off the season. The World T20 matches of New Zealand vs Afghanistan and England vs Sri Lanka will be on television.

SCC Pirates Defeat Tongji University in Season Opening Friendly

The Shanghai Cricket Club Pirates kicked off the 2016 season with a friendly Twenty20 match against Tongji University over the weekend.

The Pirates won the toss and elected to bat. Mark Henwood and Ankit Kawatra opened on a pitch that was an artificial soccer field, providing varied enough bounce to keep things interesting. Henwood batted through to the 14th over for 34 off 33 before being bowled. Pirate debutant Adrian Russell settled in and saw his unbeaten half century move the SCC's score to 180 from their 20 overs.

SCC Annual T20 Championship Finishes Strong

Sunday, July 26 saw the culmination of the SCC’s mid-season T20 tournament with Finals Day at SCSC. With players from all clubs being drawn to represent six teams the tournament didn’t fail in being a fun filled, action packed that brought he whole SCC community together.

After two weeks of rain affected preliminary rounds the scene was set for an exciting Final’s Day with Dayne’s World and Amogh’s Armateurs facing off in the championship game.

Dayne’s World skipper Dayne Wotton won the toss and just to bat first in the searing heat. Despite the loss of an early wicket the batting side made the most of some generous bowling to head into the much needed drinks break at 73-1, the stop in play didn’t slow down the batting side as they continued their onslaught with Wotton (73) James Keel (38) and Extras (62) leading the way to set Amogh’s Armateurs a daunting 199 to win.
