Thunderstorm Ends Pirates-KCC Match

The Shanghai CC Pirates took on the touring Kowloon CC side on Sunday. The morning was even hotter than the previous day, and once again Kowloon decided to bat after winning the toss.

Dylan Dearing (95 not out) and Ravi Lulla (6) opened up for Kowloon, and soon got the visitors off to a strong start. Dearing was particularly aggressive in dispatching Sameer Jolly (3-0-22-1) for four 4s in the 3rd over, but Prateek Gadhecha (3-0-10-0) managed to control the scoring at the other end. Jolly had Lulla caught by Jon Newton in the 5th over, but that was the last wicket to fall until the final over of the match as Dearing and Farooq Saeed (50) put on a partnership of 141 runs.

Dearing was strong square of the wicket in his innings, and Saeed used his feet particularly well to play some delightful shots down the ground. It was hard work for the Pirates bowlers, but Santosh Yadav (4-0-24-0) managed a tidy spell and Pirates captain, Amogh Kasyap (3-0-37-1) bowled Saeed in the final over. Kowloon had scored an imposing total of 170/2 off their 20 overs.

The Pirates openers Alex Cumming (38) and Ross Candido (0) began well, but Candido was caught in the 2nd over with the score at just 11/1. Cumming played an entertaining cameo, with strong drives down the ground off Aditya Kanthan (3-0-30-0), but was out in the 5th over with the score at 49/2. Jon Newton (26 not out) and Bhaskar Vadlamani (17) continued the attack and kept the Pirates ahead of the asking run rate. Vadlamani fell in the 11th over with the score at 99/3, but Mark Henwood (0 not out) only faced one delivery before a torrential thunderstorm ended the match. The pick of the Kowloon bowlers was spinner, Ravi Sujanani (3.5-0-28-3), who picked up all three wickets.

The captains declared the match drawn, as the game was still evenly poised, before both teams shared a final lunch together at the SRFC and the Kowloon team departed for the airport.
